Broncos tackle Mike McGlinchey to miss about a month with knee injury
Alex Palczewski is a candidate to replace McGlinchey in the lineup, as is veteran tackle Matt Peart
The Broncos’ offense has had its share of problems to start the season, and now there is a new one.
Right tackle Mike McGlinchey suffered a knee injury late in Sunday’s 13-6 loss to Pittsburgh and is expected to miss about a month. NFL Media reported the injury is a “significant MCL sprain.’’
“I think he’s definitely one of the top tackles in the league, so it’s obviously going to be a blow,’’ said Broncos defensive end Zach Allen. “But I think that (offensive line) room is really deep. He’s such a great leader, so whoever steps up he’s going to help out a lot. We have full confidence in that room.”
McGlinchey was injured when he was rolled up on the last play before the 2-minute warning before Wil Lutz made a 29-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 13-6. The Broncos got the ball back, and second-year man Alex Palczewski took over at right tackle for the final two plays of the game, his first NFL regular-season action from scrimmage.
Palczewski is a candidate to replace McGlinchey in the lineup. So is veteran tackle Matt Peart.
Against the Steelers, the Broncos (0-2) lost for the game in the first quarter defensive end John Franklin-Myers and outside linebacker Baron Browning with a foot injury. Sources said Franklin-Myers suffered a mild concussion with 5:09 left in the quarter on his third tackle of the game. He wanted to remain in the game but didn’t pass the concussion test. Franklin-Myers visited a doctor Monday and more will be known as the week unfolds on whether he will be able to play Sunday at Tampa Bay.
McGlinchey’s injury could hamper an offense that didn’t score a touchdown against the Steelers. Despite the injuries to Franklin-Myers and Browning, the Broncos did have a solid defensive outing Sunday.
Confidence in Nix
Out of 33 NFL quarterbacks, Broncos rookie Bo Nix is rated No. 30 through two weeks by Pro Football Focus. But wide receiver Josh Reynolds insisted he hasn’t lost any confidence.
“It’s always hard losing your first two games, especially as a starter,’’ Reynolds said. “But I don’t see anything different about Bo right now. He still looks as confident as ever and I think he’ll just continue to get better at understanding the offense as he goes.”
Broncos coach Sean Payton said he saw improvement by Nix from the 26-20 loss at Seattle in the Sept. 8 opener.
“I thought he processed pretty quickly (Sunday),’’ Payton said. “I thought he got into some of his progressions really well. … I felt like we saw steps. … I feel a confident player. I think from that standpoint, I’m encouraged.”
Nix had some struggles in college at Auburn in his first three seasons before breaking loose in his final two years at Oregon. Payton said those experiences has helped him deal with adversity
“He’s been through the fire storm, if you will,’’ Payton said. “You’re better prepared, you’re better served when it comes around again. … He’s someone that I think by nature is confident in his preparation, in his ability and is not going to be discouraged easily.”
Broncos getting away
After the game at Tampa Bay, the Broncos will remain on the East Coast to practice before playing at the New York Jets on Sept. 29.
“It’s not make or break, but we’re going to have a better idea of where this team is going to be after these next two weeks going on the road to Tampa and then of course practicing a week on the Eastern Seaboard and then playing the Jets,’ Payton said. “Sometimes that can work as a positive relative to your team is together the whole time.”
After facing the Buccaneers, the Broncos will fly to West Virginia to practice at The Greenbrier resort. When Payton previously coached New Orleans, the Saints held training camps there.
“It will be a lot of fun just to be with the guys for a whole week,’’ Allen said. “It kind of feels like an AAU basketball tournament. So we’re all looking forward to it. Being in West Virginia, I’ve heard it’s a great spot.”
Briefly
Reynolds on Sunday caught a 49-yard third-quarter pass from Nix to the Steelers 7 on a trick play in which there was a direct snap to running back Javonte Williams, who handed the ball to receiver Courtland Sutton, who pitched it back to Nix. “We executed it just like we did in practice,’’ Reynolds said. “The look was there for it and we were able to make a big play.” Two snaps later, Nix threw an interception in the end zone … The Broncos have four sacks in their first two games. Against the Steelers, rookie outside linebacker Jonah Ellis had his first career sack and Allen had a sack and four overall quarterback hits. … Denver second-year receiver Marvin Mims Jr. played a career-low nine snaps Sunday while rookie receiver Troy Franklin was in for 12 in his NFL debut. Asked about utilizing those speedy players more, Payton said it’s about “trying to find the right combinations.”
