Denver Pioneers men’s soccer ascends to No. 1 in national ranking
The Pioneers are No. 1 for the second time in program history

Another University of Denver athletics program is No. 1 in the nation.
The Pioneers’ men’s soccer team ascended to No. 1 in the Top Drawer soccer national rankings Monday. That means a few things at DU, notably the crimson “No. 1” flag going up the pole inside the athletics complex west of Magness Arena.
“We’re wearing that thing out,” DU athletics director Josh Berlo told The Denver Gazette on Monday.
Men’s soccer joined hockey and men’s lacrosse as Pioneers programs to reach No. 1 in their respective sports in this calendar year, a jarring run of success for the DU athletics department.
“Pretty exciting to have in one year three programs achieve the No. 1 ranking. It’s awesome,” Berlo said. “It’s a testament to what the coaches and support system and community and student-athletes are doing here.
“I think we have a university that’s committed and excited for what the athletic department and student-athletes have been able to accomplish. And I think we have exceptional coaches who are excited to be here and love being here and a very supportive community that comes to our games and supports us.”
Monday’s ranking marked the second time Denver soccer has reached No. 1 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. DU also was No. 1 in 2018.
Denver (4-0-3) is on a seven-match unbeaten streak to open the season — with only one game, a 4-1 win over Yale on Saturday night, played at University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Denver hosts the University of Portland on Thursday and Seattle University on Sunday.
Both matches start at 7 p.m.
The Pios are guided largely by Colorado-raised players. They’ve beaten two nationally ranked teams to open the season — No. 2 Stanford (1-0) and No. 22 Creighton (3-1).
Denver has never been on top of the United Soccer Coaches poll, which will be released Tuesday. The Pioneers are No. 2 in that poll, with No. 1 West Virginia (4-0-1) having tied Loyola Marymount in its most recent outing.
Men’s soccer coach Jamie Franks is in his 10th year leading the program and has the Pios in the hunt for a national championship.
“Jamie has really been committed to this program for some time. He takes a very people-first, analytical approach to the program,” Berlo said. “And he’s proud to lead a program in Colorado. I think he really takes pride in doing so. His culture — and we have a lot of great cultures in our programs — is as good as any as I’ve ever seen.”
