Colorado councilmember officially charged after allegedly shooting a 17-year-old in the face
Brent John Metz is facing charges of second-degree assault and menacing after the Sept. 10 shooting
First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King officially charged 38-year-old Brent John Metz in connection with the shooting of a 17-year-old.
Metz — a town councilmember for Mountain View — has been charged with second-degree assault, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm for allegedly menacing a 15-year-old and shooting a 17-year-old in the face, seriously wounding him, according to a news release from the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of trespassing in the 23000 block of Pleasant Park Road, east of Conifer, around 4 p.m. on Sept. 10. The homeowner had called the police and her boyfriend, Metz, about the potential trespassing.
When deputies arrived, they found a vehicle parked on the public roadway. They also found Metz standing outside of a white Audi S4 and two teenage boys, one with a gunshot wound to his mouth and nose, in the vehicle, according to arrest records.
The teen who was shot told deputies that he and his friend drove to the property so see if they would be able to use it to take homecoming photos. The boys parked at the home’s gate and walked up the driveway to speak to the owner. When no one answered, they returned to the vehicle to write a note for the homeowner.
Metz then pulled up in a black GMC Sierra in front of the teen’s vehicle, blocking it from leaving, according to arrest records. Metz then allegedly got out and walked toward the vehicle, pulling a handgun out of his holster.
The handgun went off, piercing the car’s windshield and striking the 17-year-old in the face.
The victim told deputies that Metz said “My gun went off” after the shot was fired. The teen also told police that he did not believe that Metz intentionally shot him, but he truly believed he was going to die.
“Based on the information available at this time, there is no evidence to support that Metz acted with extreme indifference,” the district attorney’s office said in the release.
Metz is due in court for a filing of charges hearing Tuesday.
