Adams County District Court Judge Patrick Pugh sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for assaulting his pregnant ex-girlfriend, causing a premature birth of the baby.

Tomas Bandera, 39, was sentenced on Aug. 20 after pleading guilty to first-degree assault — causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon on June 26, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Colorado Parkway on May 26 following a report of a domestic violence incident.

Bandera had attacked his ex-girlfriend, who was six-months pregnant, with a knife, punching and stabbing her repeatedly, according to the press release. Bandera also beat the woman with furniture before stealing her stepmother’s vehicle and calling the police on himself.

The man was eventually arrested after a “high-speed” chase, the district attorney’s office said.

The victim had broken bones and lacerations. She also suffered cut nerves on her face, causing a permanent droop on one said. The baby survived the attack, despite being birthed prematurely.

Bandera was already on domestic violence probation for a prior assault on the victim. He violated a protection order by stalking and visiting the woman’s home.

“This case shocks the conscience,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in the release. “The defendant brutally assaulted his pregnant ex-girlfriend and very nearly caused her death and the death of her unborn child. I’m truly grateful that the mother and the baby survived, and that this defendant will spend a significant amount of time in prison for this horrific crime.”
