Aurora police arrest man for fatal shooting outside business
Police said the victim is a Venezuelan native not a resident of nearby apartment complexes under national spotlight.
Police arrested a suspect on murder charges for his alleged involvement in a deadly shooting outside a north Aurora business on Friday.
Aurora’s fugitive unit on Sunday arrested Denver-resident Davonte McCoy Bletson, 20, for allegedly shooting and killing the man. The victim, police said, is a 38-year-old Aurora man that was a native of Venezuela.
Police said the shooting occurred during an altercation in the parking lot of a liquor store, near the 15500 block of East Colfax Avenue.
“The victim is not a resident of nearby Whispering Pines apartments, nor is he a resident of any of the other Aurora properties that have received significant media attention in recent weeks,” police officials said in a news release.
The nearby Whispering Pines, along with a few other Aurora apartment complexes, are under a national spotlight amid fears of reported Venezuelan gang takeovers.
Friday night’s shooting began outside a liquor store. The interaction turned into a physical argument with a man and woman in the parking lot, then shots were fired, according to police.
The 38-year-old man was transported to the hospital, where he later died, police said.
Police added witnesses told police three suspects sped from the scene in a silver sedan.
Police said Bletson, arrested on second-degree murder charges, is being held on $500,000 bond at the Arapahoe County Jail.
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity, according to police.
