Broncos preparing as if Raiders WR Davante Adams will play in Week 5 matchup
Adams asked for a trade out of Las Vegas, per media reports
ENGLEWOOD — Drama surrounding Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams is not altering preparation of the Broncos.
Adams — a three-time NFL All Pro with five seasons posting 1,000-plus receiving yards — informed the Raiders on Tuesday that he would prefer to be traded, according to media reports. The league’s trade deadline is Nov. 5.
Adams, 31, did not play last week (hamstring) in a Raiders win over the Browns. He was a non-participant at practice Wednesday in Las Vegas. Dianna Russini, senior NFL insider for The Athletic, reported that Adams is expected to miss the Raiders-Broncos game on Sunday at Empower Field.
All that noise does not interest coach Sean Payton.
“We’re preparing for the starters,” he said following practice on Wednesday at Broncos Park.
Payton followed up with a story from his time coaching the Saints, when New Orleans prepared for the Cowboys and outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware. He missed multiple practices in the week leading up to the game, and the Saints didn’t game plan for the dominant edge rusher. Bad idea.
Payton said the Ware had a sack/fumble and three additional sacks in the game.
“It was just a tough coaching lesson learned,” Payton said.
The Broncos often shadow cornerback Pat Surtain against the opposing team’s top wide receiver. It’s almost certain he will draw Adams in coverage — if he ends up playing on Sunday.
“I’ve been doing it for the past few years, and just having that experience traveling against the best. Year after year, I feel like with my experience, I have been getting better with knowing my opponent,” Surtain said. “It’s just a credit to my game, and also to the staff for trusting me to put me in that situation. The staff made that call for me to follow the best each and every week. I just have to live up to that for sure.”
RB Watson staying ready
Payton said the Broncos could “possibly” place running back Tyler Badie (back) on injured reserve when asked following practice on Wednesday. Running back Audric Estime (knee) will miss at least the Raiders game before a possible return from short-term IR.
Will that open the door for Blake Watson?
The rookie running back was a high priority college free agent signing. He rushed for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior at Memphis. Watson explained how teammates like Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and Badie are helping him stay ready for an NFL opportunity.
“Just hard work,” Watson said. “Watching the way that (Williams) watches film. Watching the way that Tyler grinds. Just watching all of them — and taking little bits and pieces from each of their games — can definitely help elevate me.”
Watson has been inactive in all four Broncos games.
WR Sutton won’t exchange jersey
Wide receiver Courtland Sutton appreciates the intensity of AFC West rivalries and called the Raiders matchup a “big game.” Sutton does not plan to exchange postgame jerseys with any Raiders players on Sunday. Especially with the Broncos wearing the throwback uniforms.
“It would take a very special person on that team for me to give them a Broncos jersey and for me to take a Raiders one home,” Sutton said. “I think I only have one. … I can’t tell you (which Raiders player).”
