Natural Grocers in Denver’s Capitol Hill to close after struggling with theft and safety issues
Colorado’s organic food retailer Natural Grocers announced Wednesday it’s closing one of its locations in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood.
The store on the corner of Colfax Avenue and Washington Street will close on Oct. 31, the grocer said in a news release. It will begin store closure discounts Friday starting at 10% off everything to empty its shelves.
The Lakewood-based grocer said it will close its 1433 Washington St. store after struggling with “retail theft and safety issues impacting the store’s performance.”
“We have been actively working to address the theft and safety issues impacting our store at Colfax and Washington for some time,” said Kemper Isely, co-president of Natural Grocers, in a release. “Despite our investment in security and loss prevention strategies over the years, these factors have continued to challenge our ability to operate our store safely and sustainably, and we have made the difficult decision to close our doors at this location.”
Natural Grocers, which operates 46 stores in the state, said it would work to transfer employees affected by the closure to other stores. Some employees may be laid off with a severance and health benefits package.
The company has other nearby stores by Alameda Avenue and Leetsdale Drive, Alameda and Broadway, Tennyson Street and 38th Avenue, Colorado Boulevard and Evans Avenue and in Central Park and Denver’s River North neighborhood (RiNo).
The grocer, founded in 1955, has 169 stores in 21 states.
