Broncos center Alex Forsyth in line for potential start against Chargers

Center Luke Wattenberg (ankle) missed consecutive practices with injury

ENGLEWOOD — Alex Forsyth made his NFL center debut with little advanced notice.

The second-year Broncos offensive lineman entered with 10 minutes left in regulation against the Raiders last week when starting center Luke Wattenberg suffered an ankle injury. He didn’t have much time to soak in the significance.

“Not really. You’ve just got to roll in there and go perform,” Forsyth told The Denver Gazette after practice this week at Broncos Park. “I was excited to get out there and get playing with the guys.”

Forsyth played 10 snaps at center against the Raiders, and he might be in line for another start on Sunday against the Chargers. Wattenberg was a non-participant in Wednesday and Thursday practice. Denver might be without right tackle Alex Palczewski, too, after consecutive missed practices with an injured ankle.

“Obviously, we don’t know what’s happening. Everybody is just staying ready,” Forsyth said. “We rotated during camp and stuff, so it’s not like everybody hasn’t gotten reps with each other.”

Nix enters the Chargers matchup being sacked twice over the last three games. It’s the result of an improved offensive front and Nix’s ability to make plays with his feet. Forsyth said: “He’s also locked in on protection.”

Forsyth requires no introduction to Nix. The two were college teammates — along with wide receiver Troy Franklin — while at Oregon.

“(Nix) is doing a really good job. It’s exciting to see,” Forsyth said. “It’s just cool to have some familiar faces.”

Forsyth, 25, was a seventh-round draft pick in 2023. His phone blew up last Sunday after taking the next step in his NFL journey.

“Yeah, a little bit,” Forsyth said. “More just family saying congrats.”
