Boy killed in shooting in park south of Thornton
The shooting happened at Rotella Park in unincorporated Adams County
A boy was killed and a man was injured in a late-night shooting at a park in unincorporated Adams County on Saturday, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting occurred at Rotella Park, an expansive Adams County park located near a community of apartment complexes in the Welby/Coronado neighborhood just south of Thornton, near Coronado Parkway South and York Street.
In a posting on social media platform X, Adams County Sheriff’s officials said they received a call for a shooting at 11:18 p.m.
An Adams County Sheriff’s deputy spokesperson told The Denver Gazette gunshots were fired toward a group of seven juveniles at the park. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
The boy who was shot received life-saving measures at the scene, where he soon died, the deputy spokesperson said. His name and age will be released by the Adams County coroner’s office.
A man was also shot in the leg during the incident. Deputies said he was walking and was a bystander. His condition was not released.
Deputies on Sunday said the shooting investigation remains ongoing, but they had wrapped up their work at the scene by 12:30 p.m. and families were seen recreating at the park, which is home to a playground, beach volleyball court and at least a half dozen picnic huts.
Deputies said they are interviewing family members and witnesses. No arrests have been made, deputies said.
