Javonte Williams steps up in Broncos’ ‘collective effort’ on the ground vs. Saints

The Broncos’ 225-yard rushing effort in a 33-10 win over New Orleans was their biggest output since an overtime loss at New England on Nov. 24, 2013.

The last time the Broncos had a rushing game of 225 yards or more, it was mostly a one-man show. But not on Thursday night.

The Broncos’ 225-yard rushing effort in a 33-10 win over New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome was their biggest output since they ran for 280 yards in a 34-31 overtime loss at New England on Nov. 24, 2013. Knowshon Moreno had 224 of those yards.

Against the Saints, it was the ultimate group effort. Running back Javonte Williams led the way with 88 yards and two touchdowns, rookie quarterback Bo Nix had 75 yards and running backs Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime added 35 and 29, respectively.

As for the remaining minus-2 yards, that was due to backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham having two kneeldowns to end the game.

“It was just an all-around collective effort,’’ Williams said.

Indeed it was. The Broncos (4-3) have gotten off to slow starts all season, especially on the ground. So coach Sean Payton put plenty of emphasis on changing that.

In the first quarter, the Broncos had 55 yards rushing and they had 108 by halftime and a 16-3 lead. Williams came up big in the first half with 59 yards on eight carries.

“Javonte had some really good runs,’’ Payton said.

Williams’ night included runs of 20 and 13 yards. He carried 14 times for a sparkling average of 6.3 yards per carry.

After three games this season, Williams had 24 yards on 52 carries for a meager average of 2.2. But he has turned things around since then and now has 301 yards on the season with an average of 4.1.

“That dude, I told you a long time ago, that dude’s different,’’ McLaughlin said. “We’re going to keep seeing it every day, so it’s been great.’’

Williams rushed for 903 yards as a rookie in 2021 before suffering a season-ending knee injury in October 2022. On Thursday, he had his best rushing outing since rolling up 102 yards against Kansas City on Dec. 5, 2021.

“It felt good,’’ said Williams, who had two rushing touchdowns for the first time in a game in his four-year NFL career. “I felt everything clicked for me. … Everybody played well, and it was a great game.”

Williams gave a “lot of praise” to the offensive line for the success in the run game. It helped that right tackle Mike McGlinchey, whose best trait is run blocking, returned after missing four games due to a knee injury.

“I think it was a good plan,’’ McGlinchey said. “I think we’re pretty talented up front and we’ve got some talented tailbacks.”

The Broncos also have a quarterback who really can run.

Nix kept the Saints off balance all night. Not only did he complete 16 of 26 passes for 164 yards with no turnovers, he had the best rushing outing of his seven NFL games on 10 carries.

“I think it is just an added bonus,’’ Nix said of being a threat on the ground. “Obviously, you want to run the ball with running backs in special ways and get behind the O-line. At times, things break down and those hidden yards, I think, are really important.”

Nix’s yards sure were important. When the pocket broke down, he often was able to take off.

“It keeps the defense honest,’’ Williams said of Nix’s running ability. “And then, even with Audric and Jaleel, you never know who’s going to come in, and everybody can produce.”

The Broncos averaged 6.4 yards per carry on the night. McLaughlin averaged 8.8 on his four carries, which included a 21-yard jaunt. And Estime averaged 5.8 yards on his five attempts, including having a 13-yard run.

The problem for Estime, who missed four games earlier this season with an ankle injury, was a lost fumble in the fourth quarter. The rookie has fumbled twice in nine carries this season, although the Broncos were able to recover his first one, in the Sept. 8 opener at Seattle. Estime also had a fumble in the preseason opener at Indianapolis that was returned for a touchdown.

Overall, though, there wasn’t much to complain about with the Broncos’ ground game. And unlike in their big running outing against the Patriots 11 years ago, this time they won.
