Looking ahead: Aurora lawmakers to discuss 2025 budget, filling empty council seat
Aurora City Council members are scheduled to discuss a variety of matters Monday, ranging from filling a soon-to-be empty at-large council seat to adopting the 2025 budget.
In the council’s study session Monday night, councilmembers will discuss a resolution that would approve Aurora to apply for a grant program through the state that would give the police department money for investigating illegal marijuana operations.
The grant, through the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, is called the Grey and Black Marijuana Grant Program and the granting agency would decide how much Aurora would be awarded based on their application.
Also in the study session, councilmembers will discuss filling the at-large council seat, which will be empty as of the end of October. The current councilmember in the seat, Dustin Zvonek, announced his resignation from the council at the last meeting.
They will also talk about Aurora’s youth violence prevention programs, discussing a resolution brought forward by the mayor to “strategically realign” efforts in addressing youth violence through city and governmental partners’ youth programs, according to council documents.
In Monday night’s regular meeting, councilmembers are scheduled to vote on a resolution from Councilmember Zvonek that directs the city manager to create specific criteria for nonprofit financial support.
It also states that the city manager should include in the policy that “the only organizations that would qualify … are those organizations that specifically provide services that directly support public health and safety of the citizens of the City of Aurora.”
Councilmembers will also discuss an ordinance adopting the 2025 City of Aurora budget, as well as vote on the 2025 rates and fees for water, sanitary sewer and wastewater services, according to council documents.
Monday’s study session will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the Aurora Room of the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway.
The council’s regular meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Paul Tauer Aurora City Council Chamber, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway.
Both meetings will also be live streamed at auroraTV.org and Youtube.com/TheAuroraChannel. They will also stream live on cable channels 8 and 880 in Aurora.
Those who want to speak during the public comment period must submit a speaker slip by 6:30 p.m. Monday, the day of the meeting. Anyone who wants to comment on an agenda item must submit a speaker slip before the city clerk reads the title of the item.
