Kickin’ it with Kiz: Do the Avs have a goalie on their roster they can trust to win the Stanley Cup?
The Avs might have found a capable Band-Aid in goal with Justus Annunen. But the long-term answer in net isn’t on the current roster.
– Eddie, metro Dallas
Kiz: The knuckleheads here at Kickin’ It Headquarters aren’t going to try to fool you. We don’t know what the answer is between the pipes. But we know one thing: Alexandar Georgiev ain’t it. The Avs committed $10 million to this experiment. And we’ve seen enough. It’s not working. He won’t be back in a Colorado sweater next season. So why wait? Trade Georgiev for a buck and a puck. Let the “Yoos” loose until the Avs can find a more permanent solution.
Neither Annunen nor Georgiev is the answer for Colorado. Maybe can get by at goalie during the regular season, but general manager Chris MacFarland better wake up and start wheeling and dealing soon.
– K.M., Denver
Kiz: Back in the summer of 2022, who knew growing nostalgic for Darcy Kuemper would be in our future? Kuemper was 32 years old when he won the Cup with the Avs. Anaheim veteran John Gibson, who had appendectomy surgery last month, is 31 now. He’s overpriced at a salary of $6.4 million. But could he be as good as Kuemper was back in ‘22? Yep.
Failure to prepare is preparation to fail. Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth had all summer to alter this roster. The Nuggets are going nowhere but down in the standings.
– K.G., he’s the North
Kiz: Booth bet his job security on Julian Strawther and Russell Westbrook. Good luck with that.
We don’t know Bo Nix’s ceiling. And it won’t be until his second NFL season that we really know.
– David, roaming the Front Range
Kiz: Nix’s ceiling? Well, right now, he’s a faster Tim Tebow and doesn’t bounce nearly so many passes to his receivers. That just might be good enough for Nix to ride shotgun on the Broncos’ road to the playoffs. The defense can get Denver to Houston or Buffalo in January. Given the expectations in Las Vegas that the Broncos would be 5-12 or 6-11, that would qualify as a dream season. Nix’s job is not to mess up the dream.
It’s only seven games with Nix, but I do remember John Elway’s rookie season. Amid his rookie mistakes, there were flashes of special by Elway that instilled hope. Not sure if it’s my age or my skepticism, but I’m not seeing that in Nix now.
– C.R., biker dude
Kiz: Nix is neither Elway nor Peyton Manning. And never will be. But could he be Jake Plummer? Maybe. Would that be good enough for Broncos Country? My guess is this fan base might be reluctant to accept anything less than a truly elite NFL quarterback.
And today’s parting shot is a friendly suggestion for a Halloween costume that could get me more than candy corn as a trick or treater.
Put on a Nuggets jersey, Kiz. You’ll get bench minutes.
