Denver weather: Mostly sunny Tuesday ahead of snow and a freeze watch before Halloween
Denver’s weather is about to get spooky just before Halloween.
But first, on Tuesday expect some sun and continued warmer temperatures ahead of a freeze watch overnight Wednesday accompanied by the city’s first snow of the season.
Denver residents can expect mostly sunny skies, with a high near 70 today, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. It’ll be breezy, with a south wind between 5 to 10 mph, increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
“It will become windy today ahead of a storm system with southwest winds gusting 45 to 55 mph, across the Palmer Divide and the plains east and southeast of Denver,” the NWS said. “A red flag warning is in effect for these areas.”
The NWS said rain and mountain snow will occur today, with the heaviest snow accumulations above 10,000 feet. Higher mountain roads and mountain passes may become snow covered at times under the heavier snow showers.
Snow decreases in the mountains this evening. Then after midnight, a cold front pushes south through the area bringing colder temperatures. A few snow showers will be possible just before sunrise over the mountains and also along the Front Range.
Tonight expect a chance of rain and snow, mainly after 4 a.m., according to the NWS. Increasing clouds, with a low around 31 and west southwest winds to blow between 5 to 14 mph, becoming north northeast after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
The freeze watch goes into effect 10 p.m., Wednesday to 9 a.m., Thursday for areas around Fort Collins, Boulder the western suburbs of Denver, Denver, Castle Rock, Greeley, and Byers.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 59. South southwest wind around 6 mph becoming east southeast in the afternoon.
Friday: Sunny, with a high near 65.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 62.
