Iconic Colorado hotel makes list of ‘best haunted hotels’ in the U.S.
USA Today has released its list of the country’s ten best haunted hotels just in time for Halloween. One famous Colorado hotel made the list.
Nominated by an expert panel, selected by editors, and voted on by readers, USA Today’s 10Best is an awards program that highlights the best in destinations, food and drink, hotels, and things to do.
Coloradans might not find it too surprising that the iconic Stanley Hotel ended up ranking tenth place overall. Located in Estes Park, the “dramatic, massive, white hotel seems to rise out of the Colorado mountains.” The 140-room hotel has been restored to its original grandeur and offers over 14,000 square feet.
Although the hotel’s haunted history stretches back years, it became famous when author Stephen King used it as inspiration for his book “The Shining.” Guests report paranormal activity like children’s laughter in deserted hallways and piano music coming from the empty ballroom.
The Stanley also hosts a variety of tours and events that highlight the spookiest spots of the hotel. Guests can even stay in a number of rooms that are especially prone to paranormal activity, including the Stephen King Suite 217, the Ghost Hunters’ favorite room 401, 407, and 408.
The 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa in Eureka Springs, Arkansas took first place as the best haunted hotel.
