Colorado DMV teaming up with Uber to prevent DUIs this Halloween
This Halloween, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles is launching a new campaign to prevent DUIs in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Transportation and Uber.
The campaign, titled “DUIs are Scary,” will be giving away 1000 $7 Uber vouchers starting Halloween morning. The vouchers will be exclusively available on the DMV’s Instagram page (@coloradodmv) and will be valid through Sunday.
Halloween is one of the most dangerous holidays to drive in Colorado, with more DUI arrests processed by the DMV than any other holiday over the past five years.
CDOT is partnering with the Colorado State Patrol and 77 local law enforcement agencies for the Heat is on Halloween Weekend DUI enforcement period from Oct. 26 through Nov. 1.
Just one or two drinks could mean you exceed Colorado’s driving while ability impaired and DUI limits. The DWAI limit is .05% blood-alcohol concentration, and the DWI limit is .08% BAC. However, the DMV notes that drivers can be arrested even if with a BAC under .05 if an officer finds them to be exhibiting signs of impairment.
Additional law enforcement officers will be on duty this weekend to find and remove impaired drivers from the roads. Drivers can also expect to see saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints.
Last year, 202 drivers were arrested for DUI during this period. Impaired drivers can face costs over $13,000 for a first-time offense on top of other penalties, including jail time ranging from five days to a year.
“The scariest part of Halloween isn’t the costumes — it’s the real danger of impaired driving,” said CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety Director Darrell Lingk. “Our message is clear: If you’re drinking, don’t drive. Take an Uber or plan another safe option to get home safely.”
Besides the DMV’s Uber voucher program, Coloradoans have other options for cheap, safe rides.
Wilhite Law Firm is offering reimbursement on Uber, Lyft and other rideshare programs from Oct. 25 through Oct. 31. The offer is good for a one-way ride home for Colorado residents over 21 with a valid ID.
To be reimbursed, riders must submit a photo of their receipt and ID to an online form on Wilhite Law Firm’s website, www.wilhitelawfirm.com/rideshare-program.
If you are hosting a Halloween party, ensure your guests stay safe and avoid a DUI. The DMV recommends designating a sober driver, collecting guests’ car keys, stopping serving alcohol two hours before the party ends, and being persistent in preventing intoxicated guests from driving. Hosts could potentially be held liable if a guest they serve alcohol to gets into a crash.
