Colorado might get a second Buc-ee’s – this one between Denver and Colorado Springs

Not many people get excited when a new gas station comes to town… unless that gas station is called Buc-ee’s.

Known for having dozens of fuel pumps, fresh food, a massive merchandise section, and a friendly beaver mascot that greets customers, the Texas-based Buc-ee’s chain has amassed a large following since being founded in 1982. And the beloved chain recently made national headlines when it expanded to Colorado, opening up shop in Johnstown earlier this year, just south of Fort Collins and along the state’s northern stretch of I-25 (we recently discussed our experience during a visit to this Buc-ee’s on the OutThere Colorado Podcast. Fans of Buc-ee’s will be happy to hear that there’s a chance another Buc-ee’s will be built in Colorado, this one between Denver and Colorado Springs.

Mayor of Palmer Lake Glant Havenar recently addressed this possibility in a Facebook post, referencing that a developer has reached out about annexing land near Palmer Lake for a potential Buc-ee’s on County Line Road and I-25. Palmer Lake is a town of about 2,500 residents that’s located roughly 20 miles north of downtown Colorado Springs and roughly 40 miles south of downtown Denver.

According to Mayor Havenar, state statute requires that anyone who requests an annexation hearing gets one, and thus an eligibility hearing is set to take place on December 12. This hearing won’t involve a decision on annexation, but rather whether or not the process toward potential annexation can move forward.

If it’s determined that annexation is a possibility, there would be a series of community meetings to follow before any sort of final decision is made. Public input is involved throughout the process.

“At this stage, we cannot comment on the project, whether we believe it meets eligibility, or share any thoughts or opinions on its viability and merits,” reads Mayor Havenar’s post.

Online reactions related to the announcement have been mixed. Some people have expressed concern with adding the massive convenience store to a relatively quiet Colorado town. Others have claimed the Buc-ee’s addition would be perfect for the many travelers that drive between Denver and Colorado Springs everyday.

So, there you have it – it looks like a lengthy process lies ahead regardless of whether or not the annexation comes to fruition, but at this point, there seems to be a chance that Buc-ee’s is eyeing another spot in Colorado.
