WATCH: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo grizzly bear catches snowflakes following winter storm

Snow days aren’t just for the kids — the animals at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo enjoy them, too!

After Colorado Springs was hit by a winter storm, the zoo captured a cute moment on camera of its grizzly bear catching snowflakes on his tongue Wednesday.

In the video, a 19-year-old grizzly bear named Emmett, is seen sitting in a blanket of snow, with his nose in the air as he playfully attempts to catch snowflakes.

The grizzly bear was brought to the zoo in 2007, along with his “longtime roommate” Digger. The two bears have since become staples of the zoo.

The two joined the zoo family after being labeled “nuisance bears” following several negative interactions with humans before they were removed from the wild, according to the zoo.

At the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo “they live active and comfortable lives, away from the temptations that got them in trouble in the wild,” the zoo said.

Contrary to popular belief, grizzly bears in the wild don’t hibernate during winter but instead slow down, according to recent scientific studies, the zoo said.

“Bigger native animals, like bears, raccoons, and skunks, can gain enough weight to carry them through the cooler season without hibernation. However, the seasonal switch impacts them in other ways,” zoo officials said.

During wintertime, larger animals, including bears, go into torpor — a hormonal, physiological, and behavioral change triggered by the changing seasons, according to the zoo.

“In torpor, body systems slow down and animals may sleep more, but they still wake up. In the summer and fall, our grizzlies want to eat, eat, eat. When it starts to cool down, they’re less interested in eating and have less energy, but they’re still pretty active at the Zoo,” zoo officials said.
