Avalanche make decision in net as Georgiev shows signs of life

Predators Avalanche Hockey

The three-headed goaltender monster the Colorado Avalanche created in October is no more. On Monday, ahead of their 3-2 overtime victory over Nashville, the organization made a decision on who they want to move forward with for now.

And it’s the same two guys they started the season with.

Kaapo Kahkonen, who was picked up on waivers on October 11, was waived on Monday afternoon. His Avalanche career, at least to date, was brief, as he started just one game while in Denver. If he clears waivers, he’ll head to the Colorado Eagles and be the teams third goaltender.

This was always the most likely of all the scenarios to take place, but the Avalanche just needed to see a bit more from the two guys they started the season with. Justus Annunen did his part, helping stabilize the Avalanche once he got his turn in net.

That allowed the staff to give Alexandar Georgiev a bit of time to get his head right, and it appears that’s exactly what has happened. Against the Predators, he was fantastic in a game where his team wasn’t at their best, helping them come away with a 3-2 overtime win. His best save came near the end of regulation, where he dove to get his glove on a shot to help keep it out of the net.

To be frank, Georgiev looks like a completely different goaltender than he did just a few weeks ago. He looks calm, in control, and perhaps most importantly, confident. After giving up an early goal, he didn’t fall apart. Instead, he stuck with it and kept his team in the game while they were outshot 12-6 in the first.

In the past, Jared Bednar hasn’t been afraid to give Georgiev what he calls “mental breaks.” Between October 18 and November 7, the netminder started just one game. While he wasn’t playing, he was still working.

“Just trying to figure out how to be better,” Georgiev said, about what he does when he’s in those breaks. “I definitely had to improve to give us a better chance to win, and just trying to stay extra on the ice. Just trying to watch the game as much as possible, see what plays other teams are trying to make, and just be ready for the next game.”

His coach always comes back to him, probably because he knows these breaks tend to work.

“Georgie cares,” Bednar said after the win against Nashville. “I know he cares and I know he works hard. But the mental side of it, it just takes some players longer to reset after things don’t go their way than others.”

For now, the Avalanche are taking advantage of Georgiev finding some momentum. And as we’ve seen over the previous two years, Bednar won’t be afraid to continue playing his starting goaltender if he feels it gives them the best chance to win.

“He’s competing hard in there,” Bednar said.

Avalanche 3, Predators 2

What happened: Both goaltenders played lights out, but it was the Avalanche who found a way to get the winning goal in overtime.

What went right: Colorado loves offense from their defense, and two of their top defensemen finally found the back of the net against Nashville. Devon Toews, who Bednar admitted hasn’t been 100% healthy this season, scored his first of the year on a bouncing shot from the blueline, and Sam Girard finished the game on a breakaway in overtime. With so many forwards missing, the blueline chipping in is imperative to their success.

What went wrong: Another slow start, as Colorado wasn’t very good in the first period and found themselves trailing after one. They were able to find a way to crawl back into it and win, but they can’t keep making a habit out of these slow starts.

Avalanche goal scorers: Toews (1), Rantanen (9), Girard (1)

Predators goal scorers: Evangelista (2), Sissons (2)

Between the pipes: Alexandar Georgiev was terrific in net, stopping 29 of the 31 shots sent his way.

What’s next: Colorado will stay home for a few more days and host the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
