Rockslide closes access to popular waterfall area in Colorado indefinitely
Access to a popular waterfall has been put on temporary hold after a rockslide took place in Boulder County.
According to the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department, a rockslide in Boulder Canyon damaged some trail in the area and a temporary safety closure is now in place, rendering the highly popular Boulder Falls area unreachable.
Recent weather conditions – a lot of snow and big temperature swings – were likely a key factor in the rockslide, expected to have triggered soil movement. The resulting rockslide is said to have damaged key trail infrastructure that’s designed to capture rocks and keep sediment on the hillside, thus additional risk in the area exists.
According to officials, there’s no estimated timeline for the reopening of the trail to the popular waterfall destination. Damage is currently being assessed to determine what repairs and maintenance will be needed for the waterfall to be safely accessed in the future.
Boulder Falls is relatively easy to access when there’s not a closure in place. The trail to the falls is a 0.3-mile out-and-back off of Boulder Canyon Drive, according to AllTrails. The typical ease-of-access has made it a very popular site west of Boulder.
The Boulder Falls closure isn’t the only notable closure to take place in Colorado in recent days, with the Million Dollar Highway also recently closed due to a rockslide. At last report, it was unknown when that road would reopen.
