Paul Klee: The Bo Show is the answer to Broncos Country’s long quarterback nightmare

It says here the Broncos are destined to meet Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs. What better time to wear your new No. 10 jersey?

It’s safe to buy a Bo Nix jersey now.

“He’s ‘him,’” Patrick Surtain said Sunday night.

Broncos Country’s long, regional nightmare is over. Denver has a quarterback again. Rejoice!

The Bo Show announced he’s here to stay in a 38-6 rout of the Atlanta Falcons. His career-highs of 307 passing yards and four touchdowns signaled there’s a new sheriff in town.

‘Bout time.

No more speculating on the top quarterbacks in the next NFL draft. No more bridge quarterbacks or Bridgewaters. No more watching gritty defenses waste away alongside gross offenses.

As the great Patrick Mahomes told Sean Payton last week in Kansas City: “You got one.”

Finally. Has it really been almost a decade since Peyton Manning? Feels longer.

Fourteen men have played quarterback here since PFM won Super Bowl 50. The search for the next one ended when Payton rolled the dice and gambled on Nix with a No. 12 draft pick.

Case. Closed.

He’s him.

Yes, Nix’s breakout performance came against a Falcons defense down four starters. Yes, he shows only one win against an opponent with a winning record. Noted. But when he rolled hard to his left and hit Lil’Jordan Humphrey in stride for a 41-yard touchdown? Or that laser-rocket down the middle to Devaughn Vele for a 33-yard gain? Or that lob to Courtland Sutton for 23?

Come on. You saw it. We all saw it.

It says here the Broncos are destined to meet Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild card round of the playoffs on Jan. 12. What better time to wear your new No. 10 jersey?

“I told him, ‘you’re trying to win MVP,’” Surtain said with the smile of a defender who knows he has a big-time quarterback for the next decade of ball at Mile High. “He’s not even trying for (NFL) Offensive Rookie of the Year.”

But no matter the twists and turns over the final six games, Broncos Country can rest its weary heads knowing the quarterback of the future is the quarterback right now. He’s a 24-year-old University of Oregon graduate who’s so young he wasn’t alive yet to see John Elway play.

Payton sees it, too.

“(As a young quarterback) you’re learning each week and pretty soon you’re like, ‘I belong here,’” Payton said Sunday. “And it’s clear he belongs here.”

Shoot, Payton saw it first.

“You feel like you’re in good hands” with Nix at quarterback, said Payton, a coach who doesn’t cede power easily.

Commanders dynamo Jayden Daniels took the league by storm and raced to a hefty lead for Offensive Rookie of the Year. While Daniels is must-watch TV, is the race really so cut and dry?

— Nix’s numbers: 2,275 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, 295 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Plus, that sweet receiving touchdown.

— Daniels’ numbers: 2,529 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, 500 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Plus, the ‘Mmanders are 7-4.

May the best young man win. Truth is, the next time Nix wins a major award, there’s a good chance he would do Nikola Jokic proud and take none of the credit while praising teammates.

“I thought everyone had a great day,” Nix said Sunday.

The best way to learn if a young athlete has what it takes is to observe how they respond to real heartbreak. Losing at Kansas City last week on a last-second blocked field goal qualifies.

Nix’s response was the best Sunday of his young career.

“There’s nothing we can do about the past,” he said.

Denver’s six wins are the most by a Broncos team starting a rookie quarterback. Nix has the most completions by a Broncos rookie (234) and the most passing yards by a Broncos rookie.

Only three AFC quarterbacks show better passer ratings since Week 3, and they are all-stars: Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen. Will the Bo Show some day reach their levels?

Standby.

But it’s been so long, you know? No offense to Paxton… Trevor… Brock… Case… Joe… or Teddy… but it’s been so, so long. Sunday’s 32-pointer was Denver’s widest margin of victory at home since a 33-point win over the Raiders at the end of the 2014 season — a decade ago.

It used to be the Broncos would sit at 6-5 and you’d wonder how the wheels would fall off this time. Lose to the Rams in a Christmas blowout. Lose to the Patriots at home. Lose to the Raiders, somehow.

Now? With the Bo Show?

You feel like you’re in good hands.

“The grit, the toughness,” Payton said. “This is a team that, different from a year ago, has that.”

The Broncos got one. He’s the Bo Show.
