One injured in gun discharge at American ski resort

A story out of Idaho is making headlines in the ski world after an off-duty employee of Silver Mountain, a spot about 70 miles east of Spokane, sustained a gunshot wound while at the ski area.

According to a social media post from the resort, the injury happened at about 8:50 p.m. on November 17, with the employee sustaining a non-life-threatening injury due to an accidental gun discharge near the top of the mountain.

After the injury was reported, medical personnel were transported to the Mountain House, which is an on-mountain dining spot, with the person who sustained the gunshot wound then transferred down the mountain via gondola for additional care.

“Out of respect for the privacy of the individual involved, no further details will be shared,” wrote the resort.

Social media commenters were quick to hop on the announcement of the incident with various questions about the situation. While it doesn’t sound like additional details will be released, two relevant questions that were asked include a question about an off-duty employee being present on the mountain after-hours, as well as a question about the presence of a gun.

One plausible explanation that was provided by a commenter related to the presence of the off-duty employee on mountain after-hours was that staff may sometimes lodge on the mountain overnight in order to assist with early-morning activities related to getting the gondola going, with the presence of a gun potentially explained by the wild nature of the terrain and predators. Unless more information is released or courts get involved, these questions may go publicly unanswered.
