Denver Broncos rookie class showing up big in 2024 NFL season

QB Bo Nix, OLB Jonah Elliss, WR Troy Franklin and others making impact

ENGLEWOOD — The kids are alright.

At least, when it comes to evaluating Broncos rookies, youth has been a serious advantage.

Most of their 2024 NFL draft class — QB Bo Nix, OLB Jonah Elliss, WR Troy Franklin, CB Kris Abrams-Draine, RB Audric Estime, WR Devaughn Vele and OL Nick Gargiulo — has contributed to Denver being in playoff position (6-5) entering Week 12 against the Raiders on Sunday in Las Vegas.

“Our personnel department does such a good job. They’re good evaluators,” offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said following practice this week at Broncos Park. “But also, just getting information to you. What are the work habits of these guys? What’s the maturity level? Obviously, the talent of a player is important to us. But also, what kind of worker he is and how he is in the locker room, those things carry a lot of weight with us. … Obviously, they were spot on with a lot of these guys.”

Here is a closer look at all seven members of the Broncos’ latest rookie class and their production through 11 games this season:

QB BO NIX

Round 1 (No. 12 overall) — Oregon

Broncos stats: 2,275 yards passing, 65.5 completion percentage, 14 passing TDs, 6 INTs; 63 carries for 295 yards and four rushing TDs.

Total snaps: 702 offense (11 games).

Highlight: Threw for 307 yards and four TDs in a home win over the Falcons.

Lowlight: Totaled zero TD passes and four INTS against Seahawks and Steelers to begin season.

Bottom line: Nix has developed from struggling rookie to AFC Offensive Player of the Week over the course of 11 games. He’s inspired confidence that Denver finally solved its long-running QB problem.

Quotable: “We have a very selfless team and selfless offense. We don’t really care where the ball goes. We just want to score touchdowns and find ways to move the ball.” — Nix

OLB JONAH ELLIS

Round 3 (No. 76 overall) — Utah

Broncos stats: 22 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, three sacks and two pass deflections.

Total snaps: 288 defense, 163 special teams (11 games).

Denver Broncos linebacker Jonah Elliss (52) sacks Atlanta quarterback Kirk Cousins during the fourth quarter of a game at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024. The Broncos defeated the Falcons 38-6. (Jerilee Bennett,The Gazette)

Highlight: Got his first NFL sack in Week 2 vs. Pittsburgh and a personal best four tackles (two for loss).

Lowlight: Did not log any defensive statistics in a Week 1 road loss to the Seahawks.

Bottom line: The Broncos are stacked at edge rusher with Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper. But Elliss is forcing his way into the rotation with big plays in almost every game.

Quotable: “He’s given us good snaps. … We felt like saw a few different things (on his college tape), and we saw athleticism.” — Coach Sean Payton on Ellis

WR TROY FRANKLIN

Round 4 (No. 102 overall) — Oregon

Broncos stats: 17 receptions for 159 yards, seven first downs and two TDs; two carries for eight yards.

Total snaps: 231 offense (10 games).

Denver Broncos wide receiver Troy Franklin (16) is pursued by Atlanta Falcons safety Richie Grant (27) during the second quarter of a game at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024. The Broncos defeated the Falcons 38-6. (Jerilee Bennett,The Gazette)

Highlight: Caught his first NFL touchdown pass in a Week 6 loss vs. the Chargers.

Lowlight: Dropped a slightly overthrown TD pass in Week 5 victory over the Raiders.

Bottom line: Franklin, 21, required time adjusting to the NFL’s physicality and offensive complexity. His maturity has blossomed to become one of Nix’s favorite targets.

Quotable: “I’m just waiting for my turn. Just being patient out there, waiting for my number to be called and (I) have to execute when it’s that time.” — Franklin

CB KRIS ABRAMS-DRAINE

Round 5 (No. 145 overall) — Missouri

Broncos stats: None

Bottom line: Abrams-Draine is awaiting his NFL debut. He’s been inactive for every game this season.

RB AUDRIC ESTIME

Round 5 (No. 147 overall) — Notre Dame

Broncos stats: 35 carries for 164 yards and two fumbles.

Denver Broncos running back Audric Estime (23) flies over Atlanta Falcons cornerback Clark Phillips III (22) during the third quarter of a game at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024. The Broncos defeated the Falcons 38-6. (Jerilee Bennett,The Gazette)

Total snaps: 63 offense; 35 special teams (seven games)

Highlight: Burst for a 21-yard rushing gain in a Week 9 road loss to the Ravens.

Lowlight: Fumbled twice over his first three NFL game appearances.

Bottom line: Estime has flashed elite skills in several games this season, but he’s also lacked consistency. The Broncos will ride the hot hand between Estime and Javonte Williams at running back.

Quotable: “If you can’t hold the ball, you can’t be a functional offense. So, I’ve just got to be more cautious of it no matter what. Ball security trumps extra yards.” — Estime

WR DEVAUGHN VELE

Round 7 (No. 235 overall) — Utah

Broncos stats: 26 catches for 281 yards, 14 first downs and one touchdown.

Total snaps: 230 offense

Denver Broncos wide receiver Devaughn Vele (17) stiff arms Atlanta Falcons safety Justin Simmons (31) during the second quarter of a game at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024. The Broncos defeated the Falcons 38-6. (Jerilee Bennett,The Gazette)

Highlight: Hauled in a 33-yard catch from Nix last week, arguably his best throw of the season to date.

Lowlight: Missed several games early in the season with a rib injury.

Bottom line: Vele, 26, has maturity beyond his rookie experience. He’s developed into a big-play threat for this Broncos offense.

Quotable: “It’s just great coaching and great vets helping us feel comfortable. The offense gave us opportunities to make plays and the team trusts us.” — Vele on the rookie class

OL NICK GARGIULO

Round 7 (No. 256 overall) — South Carolina

Broncos stats: None

Bottom line: Gargiulo is awaiting his NFL debut. He’s been inactive for every game this season.
