No. 1 DU Pioneers hockey drops second straight to Arizona State
After winning 12 straight to start the season, the No. 1-ranked University of Denver is dealing with a losing streak.
After dropping their first game of the season on Friday to Arizona State, 3-2, the Pioneers fell, 5-2, on Saturday to the Sun Devils at Magness Arena. Dating back to last season’s national championship, DU had won 22 straight before Friday’s loss.
The Pioneers opened the scoring on Saturday with a goal by Sam Harris in the first period and held a 1-0 lead heading to the second frame.
It went downhill from there, as the Sun Devils scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Artem Shlaine, who made two goals in Friday’s win for ASU, scored in the second period.
Aidan Thompson cut the deficit to 3-2, but Shlaine found the back of the net again to extend the lead to 4-2. The Sun Devils added an empty netter.
The Pioneers will be off this coming weekend but will head to Western Michigan for a series Dec. 6-7.
