Broncos at Raiders: 3 takeaways from Denver’s 29-19 win

The Broncos defeated the Raiders, 29-19, on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Week 12 of the NFL season.

Here are three takeaways from the road victory.

Momentum flipped

The Broncos took control early in the third quarter when safety Brandon Jones — questionable entering the game because of illness — intercepted Raiders QB Gardner Minshew. His 37-yard return set up a quick Denver scoring drive with rookie QB Bo Nix hitting WR Courtland Sutton for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The Broncos took a 16-13 lead. Sutton closed the game with eight receptions for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns as their go-to playmaker in Las Vegas. Denver improved to 7-5 on the season and will host the Cleveland Browns in Week 13 on Monday Night Football at Empower Field.

Injury impact

DE Zach Allen, on pace for a Pro Bowl season, was ruled inactive before Week 12 with a heel injury suffered in practice on Friday. It had a clear impact on the Broncos’ interior pass rush. CB Riley Moss left in the second quarter with a knee injury suffered while making a tackle. Moss did not return and was replaced in the secondary by Levi Wallace. RB Jaleel McLaughlin briefly exited in the first half with a knee injury before returning to the game. Generally, the Broncos have been fortunate with most starting players being healthy (minus inside linebacker Alex Singleton). Now, they are being tested.

Playing from behind

The Broncos trailed 13-9 at halftime. Their defense gave up three consecutive scoring drives after forcing two punts to begin the game. The Raiders also converted a fake punt for first down. Denver’s offense stalled with three Wil Lutz field goals instead of touchdowns. Give the Broncos credit for rallying in the second half to put away a lesser opponent. Late in the fourth quarter, OLB Nik Bonitto forced a fumble recovered by DT Malcolm Roach. Nix also delivered three scoring drives in the fourth quarter to help put the game out of reach for Las Vegas. The Broncos are inching closer to a playoff spot.
