Vehicular chase followed wanted man getting ID’d at Colorado state park

A scary situation reportedly unfolded at a Colorado state park earlier this week, when a man with a felony warrant was identified by park staff.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, officers contacted a man who was at Highline Lake State Park in western Colorado without the required park pass and fishing license at about 8:40 a.m. on November 25. The man was reportedly acting “odd,” but was ultimately guided to the Visitor Center to purchase required documents.

At that point, the man was identified as Christopher Beamon, 30, with Beamon considered a wanted man due to a felony warrant out of Boulder County.

As authorities attempted to contact Beamon again while he was in his vehicle, he allegedly accelerated toward the officers at a high rate of speed before exiting the park.

Officers were able to safely evade Beamon’s vehicle, then contacting Colorado State Patrol and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office about the situation.

State troopers spotted Beamon’s van near the town of Loma and initiated a pursuit. Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports that during this pursuit, Beamon allegedly attempted to strike a Colorado State Patrol vehicle and refused to stop.

Beamon’s vehicle eventually did end up stopping on an I-70 frontage road in the area of northwest Grand Junction. At that point, law enforcement made “loudhail calls” in an attempt to get Beamon to exit the vehicle. Beamon allegedly armed himself with a large knife, which prompted authorities to deploy two ‘less-lethal’ 40mm rounds into the van. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responded with an armored vehicle to prevent another escape by Beamon.

By 10:26 a.m., Beamon reportedly complied with commands and exited his vehicle to be taken into custody without further incident.

Beamon was booked on multiple charges, including:
