Snow impacts metro Denver: Over 500 delayed flights, snow totals

Snow is expected to last until around 2 p.m. Wednesday

Though Denverites won’t see the nearly 20-inches of snow that slammed the metro area earlier this month, some wet snow moved through the region early Wednesday morning.

Snow began early morning, with totals expected around an inch, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. Snow is expected until around 2 p.m. with a chance of precipitation at 80%; some snow has already accumulated around the area.

Castle Rock is expected to see the most snow in the Denver metro with around 4-9 inches predicted.

As of 9 a.m., there are no road closures around the metro, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, but some westward roads in the mountains are experiencing travel difficulties. For example, northbound Colorado 9 two miles north of Alma was closed at 7 a.m., Wednesday. US 6 is also closed between Mile Point 222 and I-70, around three miles east of Keystone.

Those traveling via plane flight for the Thanksgiving holiday may also experience some delays Wednesday. Denver International Airport has 567 incoming and outgoing delays as of 3:00 p.m., according to FlightAware. Only two flights have been cancelled.

Those flying out of the city should check FlyDenver.com for specific delays.

Denver is also activating emergency shelters for five days starting Wednesday as cold weather is expected to blanket the region this Thanksgiving weekend.

Beginning at 1 p.m., Wednesday, the city will open three shelters at the former Best Western hotel at 4595 Quebec St., and the city facilities at 2601 W. 7th Ave. and 375 S. Zuni St. The former Best Western hotel is now a homeless shelter.

All shelters will close at 11 a.m., Monday, according to the city’s housing department.

“Cold weather poses a serious danger to people who are unsheltered,” city officials said.

Denver offers shelters for specific demographics:

  • For individual men: Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street Community Center, 2222 Lawrence St.

  • For individual women: Samaritan House, 2301 Lawrence St.

  • For youth ages 15-20: Urban Peak, 1630 S. Acoma St.

  • Families in need of shelter should call the Connection Center at (303) 295-3366.
