3 arrested in connection to July shooting in Aurora

The Aurora Police Department arrested three men in connection to a shooting that struck an officer’s vehicle in July.

Officers arrested 23-year-old Jose Daniel Gimenez-Chacin and 29-year-old Alonzo Lara in October in connection to the shooting that occurred on July 28. A third suspect, 29-year-old Yilbert Fransua Maldonado-Moncada, was found to be in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in November, according to a press release from APD.

All three suspects are charged in the Arapahoe District Court with six counts of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree assault and one count of first-degree assault, according to the release.

The shooting occurred around 11:45 p.m. on July 28 near the intersection of South Havana Street and East Idaho Place. An on-duty officer was driving down Havana Street when he heard gunfire and reported that his vehicle had been struck by a stray bullet.

Around 10 minutes later, a man reported to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound. The victim told officers that he had been walking down South Havana Street when he heard several gunshots and realized he had been hit.

Four other victims were identified in the gunfight.

The APD Crime Gun Intelligence Unit began an investigation and found, through security camera footage, that a rolling gunfight had taken place on South Havana Street between a black Land Rover SUV and a white Ford F150 pickup, according to the release.

Shell casings linked the suspected firearm to two other shootings in the area — one earlier in the day in Aurora and another in Denver after the South Havana Street shooting.

Investigators were able to link the shooting to the aforementioned three suspects — all thought to have been in the Land Rover. Suspects in the white truck have not been identified and arrested, according to police.

Gimenez-Chacin remains in custody on $750,000 bond. Lara remains in custody on $500,000 bond. Maldonado-Moncada remains in custody on $250,000 bond.

A police spokesperson told The Denver Gazette that the suspects have not been verified as members of the Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang — the Venezuelan gang that has gained notoriety throughout the nation with direct ties to the city.

The shooting occurred around half a mile from the impromptu celebration of the election loss of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro at the the intersection at Mississippi Avenue and South Havana Street. Around 4,000 immigrants gathered in the area at the time.
