Denver offering free recycling for holiday lights

Danielle Ledezma strings Christmas lights around poles used to create a winter-themed arch outside of her West Washington Park home on Nov. 30, just one of the many residents getting into the holiday spirit. Denver is running a recycled holiday lights drop off through Jan. 3.

While most holiday lovers already have their lights and decorations set up for the season, those long-forgotten tangled lights wasting away in the garage or basement can be an absolute hassle.
But don’t toss them in the trash!
For those throwing away those jumbled up holiday lights no longer worthy of being strung on the house or tree, look no further than the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s (DOTI) free holiday light recycling centers.
DOTI will be hosting two recycling drop offs from now until Jan. 2, according to a press release from the department. Otherwise, the holiday lights should not be placed in purple recycling carts.
The two centers are at Cherry Creek Recycling Center at South Quebec Street and East Cherry Creek South Drive and at Blue Star Recyclers at 953 Decatur St.
The Cherry Creek location will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday until Jan. 3.
The Blue Star Recyclers location will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Light strings and wires with incandescent, LED and “icicle” lights are accepted. Attached bulbs are also okay, according to the press release. Bubble lights and neon lights are not accepted.
Light strings should be removed from any carboard boxes or plastic bags before dropping them off.
Last year, Denver residents recycled 4,352 pounds of holiday lights, more than two tons of lights, according to the release.
