Police believe man who crashed into building had self-inflicted gunshot wound
The crash near South Federal Boulevard and West Virginia Avenue in Denver also resulted in a gas leak.
A man who was found with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle after that vehicle struck a building in Denver likely shot himself in the leg, Denver Police said in an update.
Denver Fire posted on social media about a “building collapse” near West Virginia Avenue and South Federal Boulevard just after midnight Friday morning. The gas line was also ruptured during the crash.
Around the same time, Denver Police posted on X that they were responding to a shooting in the 400 block of South Federal Boulevard which is just north of the crash scene.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the two incidents are related and said that when first responders arrived at the crash scene they found a man inside the vehicle who had been shot.
The man had a gunshot wound to his leg and was critically injured, according to the spokeswoman. On X, police said they believe the man was taken to the hospital for treatment of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg.
Xcel Energy responded to the scene and assisted with shutting off the gas. There were road closures initially, but all roads are back open.
The exact circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
