A Commerce City high school was placed on lockdown as local police assessed a potential threat.
The Adams City High School — a school just west of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City — was placed on lockdown around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, according to a social media post from the Commerce City Police Department.
The department worked to “determine the credibility of a threat,” adding that authorities are keeping things intentionally vague and won’t be revealing any of the details until they can ensure everyone is safe, according to the post.
The children were released from the school and sent home around 2:30 p.m., following a decision by officials from Adams County School District 14, according to a subsequent post by the department.
The Police said they are still investigating to “determine the source of the threats.”
In an email to parents, officials from Adams City High School said: “Power has been restored on campus. The school is currently on secure status, and local law enforcement is actively supporting the campus. Visitors and parents are not permitted on campus until the secure status has been lifted by law enforcement.”
Adams City High School Principal Chris Garcia said the staff and students were back into the school at 2:20 p.m. and were fed a late lunch before being sent home. He, too, did not say what exactly the threat was.
