Denver is getting its first nonstop flights to Rome in 2025
There’s a new road leading to Rome out of Denver.
United Airlines announced Thursday it will add a route between Denver and Rome next year, making it the first nonstop route between the Mile High City and the Italian capital.
The new flight will be a seasonal route running daily on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner through peak summer travel.
Flights between Rome and Denver International Airport will launch May 1 and run until Sept. 24.
Denver almost got a direct connection to Rome several years ago from Norwegian Air. It was supposed to launch in March 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic grounded the travel industry.
By 2021, Norwegian was struggling with debt and the pandemic’s effects, The Associated Press reported. It pulled out of longer flights to the U.S. to focus on its operations within Europe.
United’s added route from DIA will come just as Italy expects to see a surge of tourists in 2025.
The Vatican is hosting the Jubilee 2025, a yearlong celebration held every 25 years to invite Catholics around the world to visit Vatican City and Rome’s holiest sites. There will be a schedule of events throughout the year, including the canonization of the first millennial saint Bl. Carlo Acutis.
The Jubilee begins Christmas Eve and lasts until Jan. 6, 2026. An estimated 35 million pilgrims are expected to visit Rome for the Jubilee, according to projections from ENIT, the Italian tourism board.
United is the only U.S-based airline out of DIA to offer nonstop flights to Europe, Asia and Hawaii. It offers 22 international flights out of Denver, including nonstop to London, Frankfurt, Germany and Munich with a partnership with Lufthansa.
United also announced seven more new routes to Denver.
The carrier will add connections to Buffalo, N.Y.; Pensacola, Fla.; Peoria, Ill.; North Bend, Ore.; Redding, Calif., Wilmington, N.C., as well as Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada.
The flights will launch in May, except for the Peoria route beginning in March.
