A man with four previous alcohol-related convictions pleaded guilty Thursday to a single charge after he struck and killed a man who was standing in a Denver yard.
James Corpuz was arrested after the April 15 crash at the intersection of West Mississippi Avenue and South Irving Street. According to a probable cause statement of his arrest from Denver police, Corpuz was headed west on Mississippi when he made a wide right turn in a “reckless manner.” As a result, he drove onto a property on Irving Street and struck the victim who was standing on the property.
On Thursday morning, Corpuz pleaded guilty to a single count of vehicular homicide – reckless driving. Charges of vehicular homicide – DUI, DUI with 3+ priors, and reckless driving were all dismissed as part of the plea deal.
Court records show that Corpuz has multiple prior arrests, including four prior alcohol offenses. According to the records, Corpuz was arrested in 2011 and 2012 on suspicion of DUI.
