What happened: The Nuggets led by one after the first quarter and extended the lead to 55-51 at halftime. A 45-point third quarter helped Denver extend its lead to 21 to start the fourth.
What went right: Denver’s massive third quarter allowed the starters to get some extra rest ahead of a busy stretch. Nikola Jokic, who finished with 32 points and seven assists, led the Nuggets with 30 minutes played. Michael Porter Jr. (29) and Christian Braun (26) were the only other starters who played more than 25 minutes. That could be helpful as Denver plays three more games this week.
What went wrong: Christian Braun had his least productive offensive game of the season. He missed all three of his 3-point attempts and finished with four points on nine shots. It was just the second time this season he failed to score 10 or more points.
Highlight of the night: Russell Westbrook turned defense into offense to set up his second bucket of the night. Westbrook jumped a passing lane, picked off Kevin Durant’s pass and threw down a one-handed dunk on the other end. A possession later, Westbrook followed Christian Braun’s miss and gave Denver a 13-point lead with a put-back dunk.
Up next: The Nuggets and Suns conclude the NBA’s Christmas Day slate Wednesday in Phoenix.
