Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone offers optimistic update on Aaron Gordon, harsh criticism of Sacramento Kings
Michael Malone provided an update on Aaron Gordon’s injury and a takedown of the Sacramento Kings leadership before Friday’s game against the Cavaliers.
Before his time in Denver, Malone coached the Kings but was fired after an 11-13 start to the 2014-15 season when DeMarcus Cousins, his star center, was dealing with viral meningitis. Sacramento fired Mike Brown on Friday following a 13-18 start to the season.
“At first, I was really shocked and surprised. Then, I caught myself. I said ‘Why am I shocked and surprised?’” Malone said.
“As an NBA head coach, ultimately, you’re going to get the blame. When they win, (the credit) is going to (Domantas) Sabonis and (De’Aaron) Fox. When you lose, it’s going to go to Mike Brown. That’s the way it works. And two, who he works for, so I’m not surprised that Mike Brown got fired, because I got fired by the same person. What really p—ed me off about it was the fact that they lost last night — fifth game in a row, I believe — tough loss, fouling a jump shooter. They had practice this morning. … He’s in his car, going to the airport to fly to LA, and they call him on the phone. No class, no balls, that’s what I’ll say about that.”
Earlier in his press conference, Malone provided an update on Aaron Gordon, who exited Wednesday’s game in Phoenix with a right calf strain. Gordon previously missed nearly a month with the same injury earlier this season, but the hope is Gordon caught the second strain before it got as severe as the previous injury. There was no firm timeline offered for his return.
“I don’t like to give timelines because they’re always so hard to gauge with a soft-tissue injury like Aaron has,” Malone said.
“My fingers are crossed that this is not a 12-game (absence) where he missed almost a month last time he had that injury. … Hopefully we stopped it in time where it’s going, maybe, to be much fewer games than the first time.”
