AFC playoffs-clinching scenarios: Broncos among four teams vying for final wild card spot
Denver hosts Kansas City Chiefs in Week 18 of NFL season
Be prepared for a wild finish to the AFC playoff race.
The Broncos lost Saturday to the Bengals, 30-24, and missed a chance to clinch a postseason berth for the first time since 2015. They still control their own destiny. But there are four teams in contention for the final AFC wild spot approaching Week 17 games played on Sunday.
The Broncos (9-7), Bengals (8-8), Colts (7-8) and Dolphins (7-8) each have a path to the postseason.
How the Broncos clinch
—Denver beats Kansas City in Week 18
Bottom line: It doesn’t get simpler. The Broncos must defeat a Chiefs team that already locked up the No. 1 seed. It’s possible that backup Kansas City quarterback Carson Wentz will get the start along with several more reserve players. Denver has already missed two opportunities to clinch after road losses to the Chargers and Bengals.
How the Bengals clinch
—Cincinnati beats Pittsburgh in Week 18
—Kansas City beats Denver in Week 18
—Indianapolis loses at least one game (at Giants, vs. Jacksonville)
—Miami loses at least one game (at Cleveland, at Jets)
Bottom line: Nobody wants to face the Bengals and Joe Burrow in the playoffs. Their quarterback is playing at an MVP level to keep Cincinnati’s playoff dreams alive after a slow start to the season. The Bengals need plenty of help, but their road is not unrealistic. Their first task is getting a road win over the Steelers.
How the Colts clinch
—Kansas City beats Denver in Week 18
—Indianapolis wins out (at Giants, vs. Jacksonville)
—Miami wins out (at Cleveland, at Jets)
Bottom line: The Colts benefit from playing two teams with a combined record of 5-25 to close the regular season. But they need outside help. Instability at quarterback is a concern as well. Indianapolis will start veteran Joe Flacco on Sunday over Anthony Richardson (back/foot injuries) in Week 17 against the Giants.
How the Dolphins clinch
—Kansas City beats Denver in Week 18
—Miami wins out (at Cleveland, at Jets)
—Indianapolis loses at least one game (at Giants, vs. Jacksonville)
Bottom line: The Dolphins are another team with playoff dreams hinging on quarterback health. Starter Tua Tagovailoa has been downgraded to doubtful in Week 17 against the Browns with a hip injury. That puts journeyman Tyler Huntley in line to start. Miami also needs help from the Colts and Chiefs to make the postseason.
