King Soopers shooter sentenced to life in prison | 2024: A LOOK BACK

Alissa

Although the identity of the King Soopers mass shooter was not a mystery, Ahmad Alissa’s three-week trial was anything but predictable.

It was heartbreaking, cruel and bizarre, as prosecutors revealed information about what happened on what would have been a typical Monday afternoon in March 2021.

On Sept. 24, Alissa was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for each of the 10 people he shot to death after being found guilty on all 55 counts against him.

In all, he will serve 10 life sentences, plus 1,334 years for the lesser charges of attempted murder, assault and possession of illegal magazines.

A pharmacist testified that she heard the gunman yell that he was having fun as he fired his weapon throughout the store aisles. A woman likely saved her life by hiding among the potato chip bags. And prosecutors said that an elderly man’s life was spared because he didn’t flee in terror.

Surveillance showed the shooter lower his gun when he approached the man, who finished up his shopping and left for home, oblivious to the carnage going on around him.

Dozens of victims’ loved ones recounted their experiences for 20th Judicial District Judge Ingrid Bakke during the trial’s sentencing phase. Some expressed forgiveness. Others said they were perplexed that the gunman never expressed remorse for the lives he took.

“How about sorry? Where is the apology? An iota of remorse would have gone a long way,” said Kevin Mahoney’s daughter, Erika Mahoney. “If you would have driven into the parking lot and said, ‘I need help,’ my father would have been the first one to help you.”

As the gunman’s family left the courthouse, his mother said that she knew people questioned whether they took good care of him as his mental illness got worse.

“If we thought or knew anything about schizophrenia we would not live with him. We are just from a different culture,” Khadija Alhidid said in Arabic, her son translating for her.
