A skier triggered a snowslide on Dec. 28 in Steamboat Ski Resort’s Christmas Tree Bowl, which is not currently open.

The skier reported the slide, and the patrol checked the area to ensure that no one was caught or injured.

In a social media post, Steamboat Ski Resort explained that the incident is troubling because the terrain is closed and not ready for skiing or riding. The resort said that significant patrol resources were needed to ensure no skiers or riders were caught, which meant fewer patrollers available for guests on the mountain. The post also explains how tracks leading into the closed area could be misleading for skiers and riders unfamiliar with the terrain, causing them to think it’s okay to ski there.

“Closed trails are closed for a reason,” the post reads. “When skiers and riders duck ropes they not only put themselves at risk but they also put other skiers and riders, and Patrol at risk. They also delay Patrol from doing the important work necessary to get terrain open for skiing and riding.”

The resort also says that those who duck ropes into closed terrain can and will lose their pass.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has also issued an Avalanche Warning in the Park Range and Elkhead Mountains through Monday.
