Bo Nix on Broncos’ chance to secure playoff spot with victory over Chiefs: ‘We just have to go take it’

Denver hosts Kansas City in Week 18 of NFL season at Empower Field

ENGLEWOOD — Bo Nix has one more chance to secure a Broncos postseason berth with a victory.

The rookie quarterback is well aware of the franchise’s long NFL playoff drought ahead of Denver’s regular-season finale Sunday against the Chiefs at Empower Field.

Does Nix feel the pressure?

“Our goal the past couple of weeks is get to 10 (wins). We have another opportunity to do that. I think this lifestyle, this situation, there are some quarterbacks who just kind of live with pressure,” Nix said on Wednesday after practice at Broncos Park. “That’s just kind of second nature at this point. I believe pressure is a privilege, and I was taught that a long time ago. There’s no pressure without opportunity. Right now, that means we have a great opportunity to go do something special.”

The Broncos (9-7) have not made the postseason since the 2015 season when they won Super Bowl 50.

“Obviously, it would mean a lot to the organization and everyone who’s put time and effort into this organization to make it what it is,” Nix said. “It’s a special place with special fans and a special atmosphere. Obviously, we’ve got players here that have worked really hard, and it would be really important to them. So, it goes without saying, it’s really important thing. … We’ve got to finish the task at hand and it’s right there in front of us. We’ve just have to go take it.”

The Chiefs (15-1) will not play quarterback Patrick Mahomes and additional key starters, coach Andy Reid told Kansas City media on Wednesday. Nix echoed coach Sean Payton’s comments earlier in the week that Denver will not alter its preparation. The Chiefs have already clinched a first-round bye as the AFC’s top playoff seed.

“We’re going to go like they’re going to play everybody,” Nix said. “That’s not our decision to make, but we have to be ready to go. We have to compete with whoever they put on the field.”

Nix took another step forward in his NFL maturation on the road in Week 17. The Broncos fell in overtime, 30-24, against the Bengals. But Nix led a fourth-quarter touchdown drive to tie it up and force overtime. That experience sets the foundation for another playoff-clinching scenario on Sunday.

“They’re huge, and honestly, there’s no replacing them. So, what you get during those games is what you’ve got to go off. That’s true pressure in the moment. That’s true time that you’ve got to go out and deliver,” Nix said. “We’ve been able to do that several times. Fortunately, we’ve been put in those situations. But at the same time, I think we’re still looking for the one that wins the game. … Until then, we’ve just got to rely on our training, what’s got us there, and continue to make those moments and be in those games.

“Because, eventually, it will go our way.”

Nix opened his Wednesday press conference with a message for those impacted in New Orleans on New Year’s Day when a pickup truck driver killed at least 15 people on Bourbon Street.

“Happy New Year everybody. First off, (my) thoughts and prayers are with the state of Louisiana right now,” Nix said. “Obviously, a tragedy. My heart goes out to them.”
