Courtland Sutton, Garett Bolles relish first Broncos playoff berth: ‘Now, let the dance begin’

Denver to face Buffalo Bills on Sunday in wild card playoff matchup

The old guys in the Broncos locker room are finally headed to the NFL playoffs.

Left tackle Garett Bolles has played eight seasons in Denver. Wide receiver Courtland Sutton is in his seventh year with the Broncos. On Sunday, after a 38-0 win over the Chiefs at Empower Field, the captains clinched their first postseason berth to end a team drought that extended to 2015.

“GB and I got to have a little moment on the sideline when the game was getting ready to be over,” Sutton said. “People talk about a guy who has been through a lot. … To see the joy and the light in his eyes, to know that we have a chance, that’s all you can ask for. It’s a really good feeling to know that we have an opportunity to extend our season. To do something special and get this organization back on track.”

Bolles added: “Me and Courtland, we’ve been here a long time. When the team rallied behind us and knew that they wanted to get it for us, it was a very sweet moment. I’m just very grateful for all my teammates.”

The seventh-seeded Broncos (10-7) meet the second-seeded Bills (13-4) at 11 a.m. Sunday in Buffalo for an AFC wild card matchup. Denver, after failing to clinch against the Chargers and Bengals, hammered a Kansas City team playing mostly backups.

Sutton hauled in a 10-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. He also led the team with five receptions for 98 yards. It moved Sutton to 1,081 receiving yards on the season, which unlocked a $500,000 performance incentive in his contract.

Wide receiver Marvin Mims joked: “I don’t know if it’s dinner. I don’t know if he’s getting us cars. He’s doing something.”

Bolles helped anchor an offensive line that gave up zero sacks while the team averaged 6.7 yards per play. Bolles, with victory in hand, carried a large Broncos flag while running toward the exit tunnel at Empower Field. He waved it in circles while screaming — “LET’S GO!” — before planting it in the grass.

Bolles missed the playoffs in his first seven NFL seasons.

Did he always believe the Broncos would finally make it?

“Yeah, I knew it was eventually going to happen. I’ve been doubted my whole life. I think our team has been doubted … coming into this year with a young quarterback,” Bolles said. “It’s just all noise. But this just works so hard with the countless hours we put in, day in and day out. I think it just paid off the way that we knew it was going to.”

Broncos teammates were quick to praise their veteran leaders upon securing a playoff spot.

Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto: “Especially Garett Bolles and Courtland Sutton. Guys that have been around here for a while and finally being able to do it for them. I know they’re happy as hell. It’s a good feeling, for sure.”

Quarterback Bo Nix: “They deserve it. They owned it this year. It means a lot. … Those two have led us really well this year.”

Cornerback Pat Surtain: “I’m proud for those guys because they’ve been Broncos for a long time. They haven’t reached that moment. … I’m very stoked for them. I think it gives credit toward their loyalty to the organization, knowing things are going to get right.”

However, in the hours following a historic victory, the celebration was already turning to preparation.

The Bills are up next.

“We’ve got business to do. It was a great moment,” Bolles said. “Now, let the dance begin.”
