Fat Bike Worlds are in Crested Butte next weekend, leave your skis or board at home | Whiteout

You’ll probably go skiing or snowboarding this MLK Day weekend, but do yourself a favor next weekend and take a break from those silly sports and go check out some fat biking in Crested Butte.

You’ll be doing this because the Fat Bike Worlds are in town, the weather will be nice, it’s not I-70’s parking lot and you have $165 to spare anyway.

Plus, as Rocket from the Guardians of the Galaxy would say, “there’s beer on the ship.”

The Borealis Fat Bike Worlds return to their birthplace in Crested Butte from Jan. 24-26, marking the event’s 10th anniversary, and this year’s theme is “Return to the Roots.”

Promoters are promising a weekend filled with competitive racing, social gatherings, and live entertainment.

The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA) launched the inaugural Fat Bike Worlds in 2015, which centered around a “not-so-serious” world cup championship fat biking race that the likes of Ned Nederlander, Dusty Bottoms and Lucky Day would be proud of.

Since its inception, the event has traveled to locations including Pinedale, Wyo., New Richmond, Wis., and Leadville.

“Returning to Crested Butte for this landmark anniversary underscores the region’s significance in the fat biking community,” organizers said of the event. “As one of the earliest adopters of fat biking, the Gunnison Valley has played a pivotal role in popularizing this winter sport, attracting fat bike riders from around the globe to experience its extensive network of winter biking trails.”

Race organizer and Executive Director of CBMBA Dave Ochs puts to bed the notion that the ‘World Championships’ verbiage in the event’s official title is intimidating.

“Fat Bike Worlds is a race for anyone who loves to ride bikes,” he said. “It’s a spectacle, a celebration, and a winter bucket-list event all in one. We can’t wait to celebrate fat biking in true Crested Butte style.”

Speaking of style, I’d bring my my mittens if I were you.

Polar explorer and Crested Butte resident Eric Larsen has a laundry list of items you should wear for a day out on the fat bike.

• Layering: Dress in layers to regulate body temperature; start slightly cold, but not uncomfortably cold, to avoid overheating as you’ll warm up on the bike, quickly.

• Unlayering: Don’t be afraid to do what I call the “Polar Strip Tease” if you find yourself working up a sweat. If you’re overheating, stop and take a layer off. The goal of any winter activity, surprisingly, is to not get too hot or sweat.

• Tire pressure: Adjust tire pressure based on conditions. Lower PSI offers better traction if the temps are warmer and the snow is softer. Go with with higher PSI if the temps are frigid and the snow is hard packed.

• Nutrition and hydration: Consume easily digestible foods and stay hydrated. Use insulated water bottles to prevent freezing and keep snacks close to your body in a pocket so they don’t freeze.

3. Gear Tips for Fat Biking (General):

• Bike choice: Select a fat bike with appropriate tire width (4-5 inches) for better flotation on snow. I ride the Voytek-2 from Otso.

• Clothing & footwear: Opt for moisture-wicking base layers and soft shell outerwear. 45 Nrth makes excellent soft shell tops / bottoms and footwear ideal for fat biking.

• Gloves: Wear insulated gloves and/or pogies (handlebar mitts) like 45 Nrth’s Cobrafist to keep hands warm.

• Eyewear: Protect your eyes from glare and wind with suitable sunglasses or goggles. Zeal Optics is a Colorado-based company I always recommend as their polarized styles offer enhanced visibility and reduce glare.

• Safety gear: Always wear a helmet and consider additional protection like knee pads too.

“Fat Bike Worlds is such a unique event — it perfectly captures the fun, camaraderie, and challenge of fat biking in a way that no other event does,” Larsen said. “As someone who spends much of my time training and adventuring in extreme environments around the world, it’s refreshing to ride alongside passionate cyclists right here in Crested Butte, my home town.”

Registration for Fat Bike Worlds is $165, which includes race registration, welcome party Friday sponsored by the Elevation Hotel, an awards party and concert Saturday with free Zuni beer, a group ride Sunday — followed by more free beer at Zuni West Brewing Company — and a swag bag for the first 250 registrants.

The first 120 Championship race finishers will also receive a retro FBW leather flask.

Regardless if you make the trek to Crested Butte or not, take a break from silly sliding-on-snow sports and break out your bike for some fat bike fun.
