Vivek Ramaswamy set to announce his bid for Ohio governor race

Vivek Ramaswamy — biotech billionaire, former presidential candidate, and President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to co-head the newly-minted Department of Government Efficiency — is set to announce his bid for the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial race, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to the Washington Examiner.

“The statement is drafted. It is ready,” a political operative with Ramaswamy told the Washington Post of his biotech billionaire’s plan to run for governor in 2026.

The news comes the same day Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) — who is ineligible to run for reelection due to term limits — announced that Lt. Gov. Jon Husted would replace Vice President-elect J.D. Vance in the Senate. He will serve as senator until 2026.

Husted was reportedly considering a run for governor, but will now have be able to run as the incumbent senator in the 2026 special election, and then again in 2028 for a full six-year term.

“Vivek’s base plan remains [the] same: to get accomplishments at DOGE and then announce a run for governor shortly,” an Ohio operative said.

DOGE was created to cut down government spending and waste, and both Ramaswamy and co-chair Elon Musk have laid out aggressive goals such as cutting $2 trillion in spending. He has since lowered that goal to $1 trillion.

Trump set the deadline for the department, which is more of a non-governmental committee, reaching its goals to be July 4, 2026. The Ohio gubernatorial election will be held November 2026.

Attorney General Dave Yost is also expected to announce his candidacy, people familiar told the Washington Examiner.
