The Denver Police Department arrested a man attempting to enter a West High School building last week.

Officers were called to the high school — located at 951 N. Elati Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood — around 2 p.m. on Jan. 16, according to arrest records.

A Denver Public Schools employee was transitioning students to a nearby building when they saw an unknown man carrying a knife walking in the small parking lot near West 11th Avenue and Galapago Street, according to a press release from the school.

The school was then placed on lockdown.

An employee attempted to tell the man, later identified as 34-year-old Carlos Robles Miranda, to leave the premises, but Miranda allegedly pulled a knife on the employee and made stabbing gestures, according to arrest records.

Miranda then fled the scene, heading on foot down North Speer Boulevard, according to records.

Officers arrived, finding Miranda running down the street. He resisted arrest and was eventually apprehended by the department.

Responders transported the man to a nearby hospital for medical attention. A bag of unknown narcotics were found in his pocket and he was later arrested on suspicion of felony menacing and possession of a controlled substance.

“I want to thank the DPS staff member for their quick action to keep our students safe and to our leadership team for their quick response in ensuring the safety of everyone inside the school,” West High School Principal Mia Martinez Lopez said. “Also, I am very grateful to our safety partners who responded quickly and in large numbers.”
