Two units from Fort Carson will deploy to the southern border to help bolster security.
A news release from Northern Command said Friday the 569th Combat Engineer Company-Armored, and the Headquarters of the 759th Military Police Battalion will be deployed. The non-headquarters staff of the 759th Military Police Battalion will remain to provide regular security.
Army Combat engineers and military police are also deploying from Fort Cavazos, Fort Bliss, Fort Drum, Fort Campbell, Fort Riley, Fort Stewart and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The Marines expect to send combat engineers from Camp Pendleton, the news release said.
The units will be among the 1,500 service members from the Army and Marine Corps headed to the border under President Donald Trump’s plan to tackle illegal immigration.
“These military forces will support enhanced detection and monitoring efforts and repair and emplace physical barriers,” the news release said. Combat engineers would likely be tasked with construction efforts and military police would likely handle security-focused efforts.
Active duty troops typically fill support roles at the border, rather than actively enforcing immigration law. President Joe Biden also dispatched service members to the border to provide support.
The Associated Press reported earlier this week that troops will fly helicopters to assist Border Patrol agents and help in the construction of barriers. The Pentagon also will provide military aircraft for Department of Homeland Security deportation flights for more than 5,000 detained migrants.
The soldiers and Marines will join about 2,500 service members already at the border supporting Customs and Border Protection.
