‘Rare chance’ to marvel at frozen waterfall in Colorado Springs area
CHRISTIAN MURDOCK, THE GAZETTE/
A Colorado Springs area waterfall is annually closed during the winter. That will change for two Saturdays coming up.
Reads the billing from El Paso County, the land manager of Rainbow Falls: “Witness the falls transformed into a glittering cascade of ice — a rare chance to marvel at a frozen masterpiece.”
The chance comes Feb. 15 and Feb. 22, when the county’s partnering concessionaire, Adventures Out West, will offer shuttle rides to the waterfall’s small canyon at the edge of Manitou Springs.
From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. those Saturdays, the shuttles will run from 101 Higginbotham Road, where parking will be $20 per car.
That’s the parking area off U.S. 24 known as Higginbotham Flats — what the county identified for an arrangement that launched last summer. After more than two years closed, Rainbow Falls reopened to paid shuttle rides with Adventures Out West from June to September.
“The closure was prompted by the dislodgment of sizable rocks from the cliff, posing a hazard to parked cars,” explains the county’s webpage for Rainbow Falls. The small parking lot remained blocked over the summer “to safeguard visitors,” the webpage reads.
The arrangement with Adventures Out West is considered “a short-term solution to make the site available to the public,” according to the site. “We are continuing to work on long-term solutions.”
Rainbow Falls’ summer schedule is expected to be posted sometime this spring.
Reservations for the Feb. 15 and Feb. 22 viewings are not required “but highly suggested.” Registration and more information at tinyurl.com/3hkm5h88
