Broncos’ Declan Doyle takes Bears offensive coordinator job, John Morton interviews for Lions OC
One of the Broncos’ assistant coaches departed Sunday to become an offensive coordinator and another also soon could land such a role.
A source told The Denver Gazette the Chicago Bears have reached an agreement to hire Denver tight ends coach Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator under new head coach Ben Johnson. And a source said pass game coordinator John Morton has interviewed to be Detroit Lions offensive coordinator and is considered a strong candidate for the position.
Doyle, 28, spent the past two seasons under Broncos head coach Sean Payton. He was previously an offensive assistant for New Orleans from 2019-22, the first three seasons when Payton was the Saints coach. Johnson has said he will call offensive plays for the Bears.
Morton, who has spent the pass two seasons with the Broncos, could end up replacing Johnson, who previously was Detroit’s offensive coordinator. Morton, 55, was a senior offensive assistant for the Lions in 2022, Dan Campbell’s second Detroit season as head coach.
In addition to now looking for a new tight ends coach, the Broncos need a special teams coordinator following the Jan. 17 firing of Ben Kotwica. And on Saturday, Broncos assistant general manger Darren Mougey was named New York Jets general manager.
