Movie rundown for the weekend through Feb. 2: ‘Dog Man’ and more

OPENING

“Companion” — (Thriller, R, 97 minutes). While on a weekend trip at a lakeside estate, the death of the billionaire owner causes a chain of events for Iris and her friends.

“Deva” — (Action, not rated, 156 minutes). While investigating a high-profile case, a police officer uncovers a web of betrayal and deceit.

“Dog Man” — (Adventure, PG, 89 minutes). Half dog and half man, Dog Man pursues a feline supervillain named Petey the Cat.

“Grand Theft Hamlet” — (Documentary, R, 88 minutes). During the COVID-19 pandemic, two struggling actors cope with lockdown isolation by staging “Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto Online” and battle griefers while connecting through William Shakespeare.

“Green and Gold” — (Drama, not rated, 105 minutes). With a struggling farmer’s granddaughter’s musical skill being the ticket to a new beginning for the family, the farmer wages all he has on a Championship bet.

“I’m Still Here” — (Drama, PG-13, 136 minutes). After her husband is captured by a military regime in 1964 in Brazil, a mother must reinvent herself after her family’s life is shattered.

“Valiant One” — (Thriller, R, 102 minutes). When their helicopter crashes in North Korea, the survivors must find a way out without any U.S. military support.

ONGOING

“A Complete Unknown” — (Biography, R, 141 minutes). Grade: A-, Scott Mervis. An unknown 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrived in New York in 1961 with his guitar and revolutionary talent, on his path to changing the course of American music.

“Anora” — (Comedy, R, 139 minutes). Once news reaches Russia that Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, marries the son of an oligarch, her parents travel to New York to get the marriage annulled.

“Babygirl” — (Thriller, R, 114 minutes). Grade: A, Katie Walsh. A high-powered CEO jeopardizes her career and family when she has an affair with her young intern.

“Brave the Dark” — (Drama, PG-13, 112 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. While living in a world of darkness because of torturous childhood memories, Nate ends up in jail. 

“The Brutalist” — (Drama, not rated, 215 minutes). An architect and his wife’s lives are changed when they go to Europe to rebuild their legacy and meet a wealthy and mysterious client.

“The Colors Within” — (Anime, PG, 101 minutes). A girl who can see the colors in others’ hearts joins a band.

“Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” — (Action, R, 144 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. Big Nick is in Europe searching for Donnie, who is involved with diamond thieves and the Panther mafia.

“Detective Chinatown 1900” — (Action, not rated, 136 minutes). A young man travels to Bangkok after being rejected by the police academy and finds that he and a distant relative must solve a murder.

“Flight Risk” — (Action, R, 91 minutes). A pilot transporting an air marshal and a fugitive soon realizes that not everyone on board is who they seem to be.

“Gladiator II” — (Action, R, 148 minutes). Grade: B Katie Walsh. Lucius must look to his past to find a way to return the glory of Rome to its people after it’s conquered by tyrannical emperors.

“Inheritance” — (Thriller, R, 101 minutes). After learning that her father was once a spy, Maya finds herself in the middle of an international conspiracy.

“The Last Showgirl” — (Drama, R, 149 minutes). Grade: B, Moira MacDonald. A showgirl must plan for the future when her show closes after a 30-year run.

“Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring” — (Action, PG-13, 178 minutes). A Hobbit and eight companions from the Shire go on a journey to destroy the One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

“Love Me” — (Drama, R, 92 minutes). After the end of human civilization, a satellite and a buoy meet online and fall in love.

“Moana 2” — (Adventure, PG, 100 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. After Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, she journeys to the far seas of Oceania and finds herself on an adventure unlike any adventure she has ever been on before.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” — (Action, PG, 120 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Mufasa, an orphaned cub, and Taka, an heir to a royal bloodline, join a group of misfits while searching for their destiny.

“Myth of Man” — (Action, not rated, 117 minutes). Thinking she received a message from her creator, Ella goes on an odyssey between life and death.

“Nosferatu” — (Horror, R, 133 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. A gothic story about the horror caused by the obsession between a haunted young woman and the vampire who is infatuated with her.

“One of Them Days” — (Comedy, R, 119 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. After roommates Alyssa and Dreux discover that Alyssa’s boyfriend has spent all the rent money, they have to go to extremes to keep from getting evicted.

“Presence” — (Horror, R, 85 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. After a family moves into a new house in the suburbs, they sense they are not alone.

“September 5” — (Drama, R, 96 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Members of an American broadcasting crew find themselves covering the hostage crisis of Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics.

“Sing Sing” — (Drama, R, 105 minutes). Divine G, who is at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose when he starts acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” — (Action, PG, 110 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails must seek out an unlikely alliance to help defeat Shadow, a villain with powers stronger than any they have faced in the past.

“The Substance” — (Horror, R, 140 minutes). Grade: A, Katie Walsh. A celebrity who is past her prime decides to try a black-market drug that will temporarily make her a younger, better version of herself.

“Wicked” — (Fairy Tale, PG, 160 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. Elphaba’s and Glinda’s friendship reaches a crossroads after an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

“The Wild Robot” — (Animation, PG, 102 minutes). After becoming shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, an intelligent robot named Roz bonds with the island’s animals and starts caring for an orphaned baby goose.

“Wolf Man” — (Suspense, R, 103 minutes). Grade: B-, Michael Phillips. While at a remote farmhouse, a family is attacked by an unseen animal and during the night the father transforms into something unrecognizable.
