The University of Denver couldn’t pull off an overtime thriller for the second straight night.
After beating Arizona State 5-4 Friday, the No. 6-ranked Pioneers fell to the Sun Devils 6-5 Saturday in a top-15 clash in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils’ Bennett Schimek scored the game-winning goal in overtime on the team’s 55th shot of the game. Schimek also netted the game-tying goal with about 6 minutes left in the third period.
The Pioneers were powered on offense by Sam Harris’ hat trick, but DU was unable to hold a 5-3 lead in the third period. Harris has 23 goals on the season. Aidan Thompson had another goal after scoring the game-winning goal Friday.
ASU had 23 shots alone in the third period and scored two goals in the final eight minutes to tie the game. Denver goalie Matt Davis made 49 saves in the loss.
DU returns home next weekend to match up with No. 16 North Dakota. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Magness Arena.
