Denver Broncos Foundation updates helmet donation program amid strong interest

Broncos to donate football helmets to every Colorado high school program

The Denver Broncos Foundation has updated guidance to Colorado school districts regarding its ambitious helmet donation initiative.

The single-largest charitable effort in franchise history — ‘ALL IN. ALL COVERED.’ — aims to provide every tackle football program in the state with Riddell Axiom smart helmets under a four-year plan starting this fall. The team announced its plan at a Jan. 28 news conference.

Nearly 60 schools representing all seven classifications have since confirmed participation, The Denver Gazette learned, with new information provided Monday to districts across the state.

Allie Engelken, executive director of the Denver Broncos Foundation, participated in two recent video calls with Riddell, CHSAA and more than 275 school administrators to help shape their next steps.

“We started the Zoom sessions with a presentation that included program overview, details about the helmets specifically, what does the fitting process look like and then really opened it up to true general questions-and-answers,” Engelken told The Denver Gazette. “We were thrilled that we had such great attendance. A lot of the questions started very logistics-based. … Then we moved into a lot of questions around the Axiom specifically and the features that it has that other helmets don’t … and a lot of questions on InSite Analytics.”

Below is the updated information provided to Colorado school districts.

Agreement: Schools can enroll in the program each year with a signed memo of understanding (MOU).

Reconditioning: Riddell Axiom helmets are recommended to be reconditioned annually, but required every two years, to meet nationalized safety standards.

Analytics: InSite Analytics — Riddell’s helmet software that records and tracks impact data — will be optional for programs or districts. However, the Broncos Foundation encourages them to utilize the service as a tool to improve player health and safety.

Engelken said the Denver Broncos Foundation expected flexibility in the early stages of a large-scale philanthropy effort. She pointed toward previous efforts to help launch girls flag football as a sanctioned Colorado high school sport. CHSAA’s rule book evolved over the pilot program to fit athlete needs.

A similar approach is being used to provide new state-of-the-art helmets to every tackle football player in the state.

“We will continue to share with schools at caravans during informational sessions. We’re also hosting one-on-one conversations and meetings with districts themselves,” Engelken said. “For those that need more information, we’re working diligently to get them whatever they need to make a decision for their school. For those that have confirmed participation in the program and signed their school MOU, they are working with Riddell to schedule their custom helmet fittings for each of their students. That will take place in schools throughout the state over the next four-to-six weeks. … Parents are welcome to join us at caravans and learn more.”
