Jamal Murray drops career-high as Denver Nuggets extend win streak against Portland Trail Blazers

A Canadian stole the show on Serbian Heritage Night.

The Nuggets gave away Nikola Jokic bobbleheads prior to their 132-121 win over Portland and had a traditional Serbian dance troupe as the halftime show, but Jamal Murray was the main attraction throughout the 48 minutes on Wednesday at Ball Arena.

“Jamal was fantastic from beginning to end,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said.

“Jamal was incredible.”

Murray scored a career-high 55 points and did so by making 20 of 36 shots from the field. He sank 7 of his 15 attempts from 3-point range. The only free throw he missed on nine attempts was tipped in just before halftime by Nikola Jokic, who finished with a 26-point, 15-rebound and 10-assist triple-double. Murray added five assists, four rebounds and a couple of steals in his 42 minutes of playing time.

“In the first quarter, you could see it. He was scoring at a high clip,” Malone said. “

“He was just in a great rhythm. The shot looked good. … He was just ultra-aggressive tonight, and I’m glad he was.”

Murray caught fire in the first half, scoring 30 of his points before halftime. He started 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

“Sometimes it just takes one shot for it to feel good. Then, I kind of remember that feel,” Murray said.

“Once I find that feel, it can happen, nights like tonight.”

Then, he scored 15 more points in the third quarter and set a new career-high for points in a game by weaving into the lane and hitting a floater in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.

The 27-year-old was flirting with a second straight 30-point game in Monday’s game against Portland, but he was ejected in the second half and finished with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He came back for more Wednesday.

“They were talking a little trash to him last game,” Zeke Nnaji said. “They shouldn’t have done that.”

Murray confirmed the early exit, thanks to a double technical with Dalano Banton, gave him a little extra fire on Wednesday.

“It’s just all competitive spirit. I’ve got nothing against Banton,” Murray said.

“I came in ready to go today. I was hot from before the game started. That’s just because of the last game.”

With more nights like Wednesday’s, the Nuggets will be hosting a Canadian Heritage Night complete with Murray bobbleheads before long. For now, he’ll settle for a game ball signed by his teammates that will go with the others from his three other 50-point performances.

“It means everything,” Murray said of the support from his teammates and coaches. “Obviously, I shot the ball well, but they were looking, hunting for me to get the ball and really rooting for me to go get it. … Tonight was just them looking out for me. I know I shot the ball well, but I brought the ball up here just because I couldn’t do it without them. That’s why we’re such a good team.”

NUGGETS 132, TRAIL BLAZERS 121

What happened: Portland scored the first five points, but Denver led by 13 after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 75-56 at halftime. Portland closed with 16 points to start the fourth but never threatened Denver’s eight-game win streak heading into the All-Star break.

What went right: Zeke Nnaji continued his strong stretch of play with 16 points, five rebounds, four blocks and two steals. He made six of nine shots, including a 2-for-4 mark from 3-point range. The Nuggets won his 37 minutes of playing time by 11 points, the final margin of victory.

What went wrong: Denver’s bench finished with just three points. Jalen Pickett finished one of five from the field and scored all of the Nuggets’ bench points. Dario Saric didn’t attempt a shot in nearly eight minutes of playing time, while Hunter Tyson (0-2) and DeAndre Jordan (0-1) missed their only shots. Portland finished with 45 bench points.

Highlight of the night: Nikola Jokic found a new way to display his brilliance in the final second of the first half. Jamal Murray missed the second of his two free throws with .5 seconds left, and Jokic crashed the glass from beyond the 3-point line and quickly tipped the ball in to give the Nuggets a 19-point lead at halftime.

Up next: The Nuggets will vacation across the globe before the season resumes after the All-Star break against Charlotte on Feb. 20 at Ball Arena.
