Body matching description of missing CU student found
BOULDER — A body matching the description of a University of Colorado freshman who went missing nearly a week ago was found Saturday.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said at 10:41 a.m. Saturday, they were notified by City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks rangers of a deceased female found near the 40-mile marker of Boulder Canyon.
Sheriff’s detectives responded to the scene and “located a female matching the description of a student recently reported missing to the University of Colorado Police Department,” a release said.
The sheriff’s office said the identity of the body will be released once it is confirmed and next of kin are notified. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will also determine the cause and manner of death.
The release said the body was found in hard-to-reach terrain that required searchers to rappel to the site.
Megan Trussell, 18, was last seen walking out of Hallett Hall, her residence hall, around 9 p.m. Sunday.
Trussell’s parents told 9NEWS Thursday that they contacted police on Wednesday after they realized their daughter hadn’t been responding to their messages. Trussell’s mother, Vanessa Diaz, said she checked her daughter’s cell phone account online and realized her phone hadn’t been used since Sunday at 8:45 p.m.
Rescuers searching Boulder Canyon were focused on that area because of a ping from Trussell’s cell phone, her parents said.
On Friday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a Missing Indigenous Person Activation for Trussell.
Trussell’s parents told 9NEWS Friday night that they were offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to her return.
